When our kids were a lot younger, after dinner walks were kind of essential to a decent bedtime routine. One of our boys would speed ahead and the other would stay close. As soon as a little hand would slip into ours, we knew what that meant. It was time to fly. We could only make it about a block before the ride would need to stop, but that was enough for our boys, most of the time.
We cant do that anymore. They are way too big, but we help them fly in different ways now. Offering opportunities for independence. Hard, but loving conversations about how to handle rough patches at school and with friends. It doesn't have the same "feel" as fligin them up in the air and bringing them back down, but we hope someday they will see that it came from the exact same place within us.
