My uncle's dairy barn used to be painted red because that's all that was available as a way to protect the wooden structure.  Rust was mixed with other inexpensive, materials like lime and linseed oil.  Then it got a handsome coat of white paint along with all the other out-buildings.  The red is returning as the sun deteriorates the white paint, creating brand new textures, patterns, and patina.  Some may see it as a barn that has lost it's beauty, but I  see it as one that is simply moving into a new season.
